In spring late may, after 17 years, a large group of Brood X Cicadas will emerge from the ground to do their final molt into adulthood. After that they will mate but then die shortly after. The residents in Illinois will be seeing them as well as 15 other states.

They come out after 17 years from living underground where they drink sap from tree roots then come out of the soil to complete their life cycle

They are clumsy, however and many animals including humans, will try to eat them. They are also really load singers so you probably will hear them if you live in Illinois or the 15 other states. So watch out in summer for the Brood X Cicadas.
